Studio Technician Overview

PennWest Edinboro’s Studio Technician position functions as a unique, nontraditional post-baccalaureate program or residency designed for emerging ceramic artists seeking time, space, and support to grow their practice. Studio techs work 10 hours per week in exchange for full access to ceramics studios, kilns, and materials for one full year. This opportunity offers valuable hands-on experience in a professional studio environment while allowing artists to deeply focus on developing their portfolios.

Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a BFA in Ceramics or an equivalent degree. They should be familiar with safely operating all types of ceramic equipment, including firing gas kilns, and be capable of using tools and performing minor studio repairs. Candidates must also work well with others in a community studio environment.

The ideal Studio Technician is self-motivated, reliable, and eager to contribute to an active and expansive undergraduate and graduate ceramics program.

Responsibilities:

  • 10 hours of work per week includes: mixing slips and glazes for the beginning classes

  • overseeing gas kiln firings

  • assisting with inventory of materials

  • keeping glaze room in order, maintenance

  • minor repairs to equipment as needed

Compensation:

This is a non-salaried position, but the Studio Tech receives clay and glaze materials, studio access and firing privileges in exchange for 10 hours of work per week during the 15 week semester.
